Request to be Excused from Jury Service
What's the difference?
Postponement: Choose a more convenient date to serve.
Disqualification: Legally unable to perform jury service.
Excusal: Qualified but temporarily unable to serve.
Excuse from Jury Service
You may request to be excused from jury service for a temporary condition that makes it difficult or impossible to serve. Common reasons include active military service and recovery from major surgery.
Invalid Reasons to be Excused
Hardship on your employer does not excuse you from jury service.
Hardship because you are the sole proprietor of a business does not excuse you from jury service.
Hardship because your employer does not pay you for your time absent from work performing jury service does not excuse you from jury service.
You may request that your jury service be postponed to a more convenient time for these reasons, but you will not be excused from jury service for these reasons.
Please note employers are not required by law to pay their employees' regular wages when on jury duty, although some do.
How to Request to be Excused
Go online request to be excused from jury service. Click the button below to get started, and then enter your Juror ID Number, found in the upper right corner of your summons, and your date of birth to access the system. Select the option on the left to Request to be Excused from Jury Service.
Other ways to Request to be Excused
By email. Send an email to juryservices@mendocino.courts.ca.gov. Please include your juror ID number, found in the upper right corner of your summons.
By mail. Complete the Excuse Request section, section three (3) on your summons, and return it to the address in the upper left corner of your summons. Include any requested information such as a doctor's note.
In person. Stop by either courthouse during business hours.
